SCA has been engaged by the 2017 Rugby League World Cup team to provide over 21 chaplains to this years competition being played in venues across Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

This also includes the Women’s Rugby League World Cup competition a few weeks after the men’s final.

Three of the teams have chaplains including England, USA and Samoa. All of the match venues have 2 chaplains serving the teams and officials with 7 chaplains in New Zealand, 2 chaplains in Papua New Guinea and 14 in Australia. SCNZ Board Member Andrew Kerr is the organising chaplain in New Zealand and Arthur Tane is looking after PNG. Hannah Johnson recently trained over 16 chaplains in PNG with two of them serving at the World Cup.

World Cup chaplaincy organiser former Penrith Panthers NRL Chaplain Steve Stubbings said, “It’s such a thrill for local churches to make a significant contribution to a major international sporting event like the World Cup demonstrating the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ.”

Further adding, “I also love seeing big men run into each other!”

Steve met up with England team chaplain Antonio Hall who also has the role of supporting the competition referees. Antonio was thrilled to be working with the SCA chaplains saying, “I’m just so excited to be working internationally with you.”

Steve also went on to say, “I just want to say thank you to all the people who have committed themselves to serve at this years World Cup.”

The World Cup men’s final is on Saturday 2 December at 7pm AEST in Brisbane and the Woman’s final is being played just prior to the men’s at 3:45pm AEST at the same venue. See more information here http://www.rlwc2017.com/.
