It’s with great sadness to announce the loss of one of Australia’s great athletes and Olympian’s Betty Cuthbert M.B.E., A.M.
Vale Betty Cuthbert 20 April 1938 – 6 August 2017
Betty, from the north-west Sydney suburb of Ermington, was nicknamed “The Golden Girl” after she won three gold-medals in the 100, 200 and 4×100 metre sprints at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games.
She was just 18 years old at the time.
With her larger-than-life smile, enthusiastic personality and unique running style, Betty Cuthbert would ensure that she remained well-known and warmly loved by our sports-mad nation for generations to come.
In an interview with Gary Bates in 2001 she recalled, ‘I was encouraged to go to a particular church where someone said, “They’ll heal you”. Well, I wasn’t healed. But I met the Healer.’ Saying, ‘My life has never been the same since.
Across her career she set 16 world records in individual and relay events. But, perhaps her greatest achievement on the track came eight years after the Melbourne Games in Tokyo when she won her fourth Olympic gold in what was the debut of the women’s 400m.
