SCA continues to play a significant role assisting Sports Chaplaincy Hong Kong (SCHK) launch their sports chaplaincy ministry. Training over 280 people from across Asia in the past three years to serve as chaplains to sports across countries such as the Philippines, India, Singapore, Taiwan, Korea, China and Macau.
At a recent Chaplain’s Celebration Dinner in Melbourne Pastor Peter Jung from a local church in Hong Kong’s North Point shared about the amazing growth and eagerness from many churches for this new ministry expression in his country. “I’m amazed at how open people are in Hong Kong to serve Jesus in sport.” Further commenting, ” It’s taken time to explain the idea of pastoring in a sports team, but eventually people are getting it.” “Now we need to see some doors open up where sports understands the way it works.””It’s beginning to happen.”
Korean born and Hong Kong raised, Jung, played and coached Rugby and represented his country. During this time he always had a passion to help support and care for his teammates. Helping and loving them through the tough times.
In 2013 he stumbled upon the Sports Chaplaincy Australia website and got excited having, “Never seen anything like this before.” Later, attending a conference in the UK with SCUK and joining in with SCA’s Train the Trainer Master Classes in early 2016. He now trains Chaplains and leaders across Asia.
Today Jung is serving as a chaplain at his local rugby club.
He also serves as a pastor in his local church. They too have caught the vision, actively growing chaplaincy across the city and training sports chaplains throughout Asia.
The growth across Asia has been significant and culminated in the first ever Asia Pacific Sports Chaplaincy Conference in Hong Kong in June 2016.
